80 Lessons in 8: Celebrating My Dad at 80

On September 9, 2025, my dad turned 80.

As I reflect on his life, I am filled with gratitude for the man God chose to be my father. His influence has shaped me in countless ways through his sacrifices, resilience, unwavering faith, and the example of how to live with integrity and love.

My dad is a man who does not just speak wisdom; he lives it. Two of his favorite sayings have guided me through life. The first is, “Tough times do not last, but tough people do.” The second is, “You stoop to conquer.”

I have watched him embody these truths. I have seen him face challenges with courage, extend forgiveness when it was not deserved, and remain loyal, spending nearly forty years in one organization. His love for God and for family, including the extended family, has been a steady anchor.

From him, I have drawn lessons that continue to shape my values: my dedication to work, the way I try to treat people with kindness, the strength I draw from prayer, and the deep love I carry for family.

As a life and transitions coach, these lessons resonate deeply with the work I do with clients. Life is full of changes and moments when we feel unsure or stuck. My dad’s wisdom offers guidance for navigating transitions with grace and resilience.

Here are eight lessons from my dad and how they relate to coaching and personal growth:

1. Things are not always what they seem

Transitions can feel confusing and overwhelming. My dad taught me not to judge situations or people too quickly. In coaching, we help clients pause, reflect, and see beyond immediate appearances. This perspective brings patience, discernment, and clarity in moments of change.

2. Pray always

Faith, reflection, or mindfulness can provide steady ground during transitions. My dad’s commitment to prayer reminds me and my clients that we are never alone in the process. Whether navigating career changes, relationships, or personal goals, anchoring in a higher purpose gives clarity and calm.

3. Tough times do not last, but tough people do

Change can feel daunting, but resilience is key. My dad’s life shows that challenges are temporary, and persistence pays off. In coaching, we help clients build strategies and inner strength so they can face transitions with courage.

4. You stoop to conquer

Humility often leads to greater impact than pride. In transitions, letting go of ego, seeking help, or asking questions opens doors. My dad’s example shows that choosing relationships and understanding over being right accelerates growth.

5. Smile always

Even small acts of joy can transform how we navigate change. In coaching, celebrating wins, big or small, helps clients maintain energy and momentum. My dad’s smile has shown me that hope and optimism are choices we can make every day.

6. Let go of offense

Transitions often stir old wounds or frustrations. My dad taught me that holding onto bitterness only slows progress. Coaching encourages clients to release grudges, forgive themselves and others, and create space for growth.

7. Don’t be afraid to make sacrifices for what matters

Change often requires prioritizing what truly matters. My dad’s life shows that sacrifices are investments in the future. In coaching, clients learn to let go of what no longer serves them to make room for meaningful progress.

8. Have faith in God

Faith or a sense of higher purpose is a compass during life transitions. My dad’s unshakeable trust reminds us that grounding our decisions in values and belief systems provides strength and perspective when the path ahead feels uncertain.

Eighty years is a milestone worth celebrating, but it is the lessons, the character, and the life lived with integrity that are the true legacy.

In coaching, I often remind clients that every transition, challenge, and moment of discomfort is an opportunity to grow. My dad’s life shows that resilience, faith, humility, and love are not just values; they are tools to navigate change successfully.

Happy belated birthday, Dad. Thank you for showing me how to live fully, face transitions with courage, and grow through every season.
